A new local business is peddling its produce across downtown San Luis Obispo, 14 customers at a time.
The Big SLO Bike is one of San Luis Obispo’s latest attractions.
The 14-person bike hit the streets last fall and co-owner Johnny May says business is moving full speed ahead.
“A lot of weddings are booking, We’ve got corporate tours that book midweek,” May said. “It’s just a lot of fun. It hits such a wide audience.”
For $315 on weeknights or $340 on weekends, you and about a dozen friends can ride around downtown on the bike for two and a half hours.
“If you fill the bike with, you know, 14 folks, it’s $25 a head,” May said.
Riders pick the playlist and route. You can choose up to three places to stop downtown during your ride to refuel with food and drinks.
“Our local business partners, we call them our Big SLO Bike Buddies, give us 15-20% off at their establishments for their food and drink,” May said.
“It puts a different spin on going to the local eateries and microbreweries,” said rider Matthew Avila of San Luis Obispo.
Even avid cyclists like John and Sara Evans are on-board with the big bike.
“I think it’s a great thing to do with your friends,” Sara Evans said. “Just to get out and have a good time and enjoy the downtown.”
May guides the bike as captain and he will flip on an electric assist if you need a break from peddling.
However, some riders say part of the fun is feeling the burn.
“I kind of like that you have to work for what you’re about to eat,” John Evans said. “We’re going to dinner in a minute and we’ll be ready.”
